A New York story in Cannes, France, Jay-Z’s music video for the track “Smile” won the Grand Prix in the category of Entertainment Lions for Music. The music video was directed by Miles Jay and tells the very personal story of Jay’s mother Gloria Carter.

The category honors creative musical collaborations and original music content, and the jury was led by Lori Feldman, EVP-Strategic marketing, Warner Brothers Records.

The work brought Feldman to tears as she explained why it delivered. It was remarkable for “one of the singular most important people in hip-hop culture to take on that issue with such honesty and integrity,” she said.
